Derek Hill has over thirty-five years’ experience in the property industry working extensively within both the private and public sectors.
Commencing his career in 1982 Derek worked within the construction industry as an electrical fitter/mechanic for four years gaining Derek invaluable work experience on both development and fully improved real estate sites.
In 1986 Derek progressed to the real estate field undertaking the Real Estate and Business Agent Certificate Course and working within both the real estate property management and sales sectors.
In 1989 Derek then commenced study undertaking the Associated Diploma in Valuation Course and that same year securing a position as an assistant valuer within the Valuer Generals Department of NSW. On completion of the valuation course Derek was promoted to senior valuer in 1993 for the City of Sydney LGA.
In 1997, with the commercialised valuation arm of the Valuer Generals splitting to form the State Valuation Office, Derek worked as the Contract Manager in the provision of state-wide asset, statutory, expert witness and acquisition advice as well as general valuation consultancy to various Government entities.
In 2000 Derek assisted in the start-up of a valuation based advisory business specialising in Government property related contract work on behalf of an established overseas based property group.
In 2005 Derek then ventured out on his own, and shortly after, to start up the operations of Valustate Pty Ltd in 2006. Valustate from the initial start-up has progressively grown each year to its current level of valuation experience and capability.
Derek’s vision for Valustate was to provide independent property valuation and consultancy supplier to both State and Local Government agencies as well as non-Government entities. This vision has been achieved.

- Statutory Rating and Land Tax Purposes – Derek is regarded as one of the leading statutory land valuer’s within New South Wales.
- Extensive experience in compensation for compulsory acquisition and resumption purposes.
- Over thirty years’ experience in the provision of general property consultancy advice for capital, rental, insurance and other property related advice over all asset classes.
- Acts as an expert Witness within the Land and Environment Court, other Court jurisdictions and Administrative Tribunals.
Derek gained his valuer’s registration, without limitation, in 1993 and is a Fellow Member of the Australian Institute of Valuers and Land Economists.
Derek provides lectures on behalf of the NSW Australian Property Institute, Property NSW, the University of Technology and Science and legal institute groups regarding property topics in which he specialises in.
